A Recovering Magpie’s Tending

This has been a remarkable summer  ~ a summer of renewal and growth. I am tending to the garden of my lifestyle. Yet it somehow it came to include the garden of my life as well. The renewal journey of the 90-Day Summer Simplifying Challenge, brought with it many unexpected surprises.

{Coming clean} I sometimes miss the gifts while focused on the work!

My Summer Simplifying Challenge

I attempt to be present to my life. I know for sure just how precious this life is. I pretty much stay in the moment I am experiencing and enjoy. However, when I work, I am super focused and block out other things. Working from home, I find myself in my office, all hours of the day and night..even the weekends. I was having difficulty turning work off.

I was tending to my job and to this challenge, yet not tending to myself. So a few weeks ago, I started tending to myself as well. I was experiencing all these beautiful feelings as a result of the  Summer Simplifying Challenge as I was stuck in my office. The computer was on, and my face was in it, from 8AM until 11PM. I ate when HIMself brought me food. Other than my trips to the restroom, I rarely strayed from this position.

Things were getting done, I was accomplishing a ton at work and I was moving my  Summer Simplifying Challenge along …but at a cost. I was working 10-18 hour days. So I added other baby steps to my days. I started exercising and stretching first thing in the morning as part of my power hour(s). I have prayed and meditated for years in the morning. Adding a time for aerobic exercise and yoga stretches was a natural progression. I was becoming sedentary to the max. That was not good for me.

HIMself does most of the household tasks. He also bring the boxes to me and disperses the contents most days. That frees me to work full out. It also ‘enables’ me become a couch potato. No, I don’t indulge in bon bons and TV, but I do indulge in hours of uninterrupted sitting and staring at a computer screen. This is not good for my body or my mind. So I changed it.

I added the exercise in the early morning. I do 3-5 minutes of stretching at 10AM and at 2PM. I shut off the computer during my half-hour lunch break. I now shut it off to sit down to dinner with HIMself. All of this is tending to me. That is a valuable progression. I am trying to unplug more at night and on the weekends. This computer has become and extension of my hands. I love the learning and imagining I do on this technological wonder…but I don’t love what I have become through my use of it. Balance! I need balance.

The Summer Simplifying Challenge is delivering balance to my home. You are seeing that in action. Once this challenge is completed, I am moving on to a fitness and health challenge just for me. I want to live to see my beautiful grandchildren grown and married.  {insert dreamy visions here}
