“It’s all work until somebody buys it, then it’s art.” -the Jeremy irons/Alfred Stieglitz character told the Joan Allen/Georgia O’Keeffe character in the O’Keeffe biopic,
Could this be true? Not so much in my world…but for some artists, it might be exactly what they believe. And it could be prevent them from creating and might even paralyze them into never sharing their art!
Don’t feel alone in the crowd…we all have moments of self-doubt and stinkin’ thinkin’ that prevent us from realizing a ROI…Retrun on Imagination. How do we overcome this?
By trusting in our inner wisdom, not our inner critic. By reaching out to other artists and connecting with them in a meaningful way. And, when ready, by asking for honest feedback on our creations.
We have talked much about inner critic, so I won’t belabor that today. I will talk about connection though because that is now the easiest and least expensive way to market yourself today. Here are some ways to do that:
- Start a blog or start using the one you have.
- Visit blogs of artists you admire and start leaving thoughtful comments. They will notice and return the favor most of the time.
- Join an art forum or FaceBook group and participate. Do not push yourself in by trying to sell your art immediately. Just lurk for a while to get the flavor of the posts and then begin posting when you have something worthwhile to say.
Slowly you will build a few friends and become part of the crowd. It does not happen overnight usually. Perseverance wins this race.
