Fight Summer Hunger with Odwalla CFK Simple Service Project #Odwalla4Kids

written by Rebecca E. Parsons

One Hungry Kid is One Too Many

It’s Memorial Day – the official start to summer beach fun for many. I strolled along the beach this morning snapping shots of kids playing in the surf and sand. As a few run back to the beach tent for snacks and drinks, my mind wandered to those kids who are not having picnics today. Those children who are fighting summer hunger because school is out and that is the only place they find food, are deep on my mind.

When school lets out for the summer, millions of children lose access to the school breakfasts, lunches and after-school snacks they receive during the regular school year. Only 1 out of 6 children who receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year continue to receive meals during the summer months. Low-income families with children face even more challenges during the summer when they stretch their food budget to provide additional meals for their children.

The face of hunger has changed in America. That hurts my soul. That is why I am always thrilled to work with Champions for Kids and help with their simple service projects. This month they are teaming up with Odwalla. because Odwalla cares. For over 30 years Odwalla (“ode-wall-ah”) has carefully crafted beverages and bars…each designed to bring goodness to people’s lives.

Odwalla Simple Service Project

I was tasked to visit my Walmart and purchase at least $50 worth of Odwalla Kid Bars and Odwalla Juice Boxes. I then donated the bars to my local food pantry to help families with hunger this summer. Simple enough…but oh so meaningful to a hungry child.

I was so moved by this project, I invited neighbors to help fight hunger in the summer by contributing to a food drive. I encouraged them to contribute nutritious snacks like Odwalla Kids Bars and Juice Boxes! I cried with joy when I saw the bag I left out for collections. As you can see below, my sweet neighbors helped mostly by contributing $$$ so I could purchase more Odwalla nutritious snacks. I raised enough to buy about 50 additional boxes…some $272. This means that I will be donating Odwalla products several times throughout the summer months.

This is such an important cause. Hunger is a problem all around the world, but due to a lack of media attention to the problems close to home, it is easy to forget that it affects our childrens’ classmates, our neighbors, our friends.

That is just so amazing how much your food drive brought in! That will buy so much food for hungry kids in the summertime. Wonderful, Rebecca!
