The redo of my Hoosier cabinet…Taa Daa…looks for less is always best for me!!! To see the whole humble and oh so messy beginnings of this sad little “piece of junk” that my son-in-law refused to allow my daughter to take here…
I restored this vintage Hoosier over a 6-week period. This is what mine looked like when I bought it for $60…
the in between…(work)…I stripped away years and years of paint. About 6 coats of stripper were necessary.
Then I sanded it well…
I had to repair the tambour door…I used book binding fabric…
Trying to find the right shade of red for the interior…
The painting took two days…
The interior is complete…
The exterior is complete….
Finished and I am so tickled with it…It was such a mess when I bought it. Now it will be a beautiful part of my studio!!! I love to create looks for less!!!

OMGosh. This is gorgeous but I would never have been able to do what was necessary! WOW.
Wow- it turned out really nice. Well worth $60 and lots of elbow grease.
Beautiful work! How did you get your tambour door out and back in? I am facing a situation with a Hoosier cabinet with no obvious way to get the tambour door out.
Thanks,
John

great work! I just got one for $55 in rough shape..mind if I ask what kind of stripper you used? Please e-mail me if you have time.
Super charming Rebecca!! What a treasure you have and the price- amazing!! Hope all is well over your way! Thanks for linking up at Feathered Nest Friday!! 🙂
I was stalking the twitter chat 🙂 and just saw this link. It’s beautiful! I love your redux … the red is awesome.
How did you get your tambour door back in??
Meredith:
There is a track up inside the top where the tambour door fits. It is a circular space with a slot that is where the door feeds in and out of the circular space. I had to turn the top upside down and feed it in almost one slat at a time, curling it as I went. Once in place, if you have prepared it well, it will raise and lower. Sometimes I reach inside and help the roll move. I hope this helps you.
GREAT JOB, Rebecca!!! I can only hope the Hoosier Cabinet I am working on comes out this good. I am helping a neighbor restore a Hoosier Cabinet like yours. The biggest problem we are having is getting the tambour track right. There was no track in the chest he bought. I can see the circle at the top whewe the tambour rolls but I can’t see how the tambour gets there and what makes it roll up. Do you have a pattern of this tambour track? Please advise. Thanks! Have a GREAT day!!! Jim
