Real Artists Ship!

written by Rebecca E. Parsons

Steve Jobs said, “Real Artists Ship!”  Do you buy that?

visions digital painting for upcoming PhotoShop Mixed Media e-course

Well Steve, I understand what you are saying, but I am not sure that I have that vision. Is it art if no one buys it? Where would that leave Vincent Van Gogh who sold/shipped only one piece in his lifetime?

People often use the term ‘Fine Art’ to aggrandize some work and to exclude ‘art’ they feel is less worthy. What is fine art really? Isn’t everything that can be seen really a form of fine art no matter what your perception?

Is the graffiti on trains less than…the doodles I create on my purses? Are the beautiful works of art created by sidewalk artists with chalk that will disappear eventually less than…works in frames in museums?

I will leave that for you to decide as I believe art is subjective and interpretive and the viewer makes up his/her mind based upon their viewpoint. A viewer can be swayed by critics, sales figures or gallery owners, but does it make it any less art if someone fails to recognize it as such?

I would rather see a discussion on good art versus bad art, as that is where I believe the problem lies. Anyone who can afford a crayon or a computer can ‘art’ create today…but is it good? That too is subjective, I guess.
