Second Hand Love Story

written by Rebecca E. Parsons

Second Hand Love Story is a new feature here on C8C

I am a curator, collector, preservationist…OK, a thrift store junkie. I am addicted to ‘The Find.’ It is ALL about the thrill of the hunt for me. Part visionary, part creative, part environmentalist, part historian…I can spot a hidden gem a block away!

A least once a week (maybe more WINK WINK), I strap on my creative compass and head out to feed my craving. There are three wondrous thrift stores on or near my little island plus regular estate and garage sales to scour. For some reason, known only to them, people here discard the most amazing things. That’s would be a win for me…and you, my readers, as I have loads of fascinating stories to share.

The Find

And that brings me to this month’s second hand love story. I stole this piece for $24! It is one of my favorite pieces of furniture. My brother-in-law asked when I was going to refinish it because sometimes I (meaning we) do that. And I immediately gave an indignant gasp of horror!!! “NEVVA!!!” I said with all the sweet firmness of a genteel Southern belle. He had the grace of a Southern gentleman to drop it. So it goes…

This chest is a functional treasure because it’s three drawers are put to good use in my tiny home I affectionally call ‘Mermaid Manor.’ When you downsize, most pieces must have dual purposes. This piece, I call Rusty, holds my cards and stationery, my collection of vintage linen napkins as well as my paper napkins. A southern girl must always be prepared for an impromptu get together. Right? (insert meaningful smile here)

Beautiful piece!! I agree, don’t ever refinish it. It’s perfect as is. 🙂
