A Beachy Spin of the Color Wheel Decor

written by Rebecca E. Parsons

I have always loved color. From my wardrobe to my decorating style, color makes a statement for me. How then did I end up with a blah bedroom? This Wayfair Homemaker was compensated with a gift card to add a pop of color to her bedroom. I fixed it with a beachy spin of the color wheel. Look at the difference it makes compared to the before photo below.

Even a small use of color can ramp up the energy in a home. High energy might not be a good thing in a room made for relaxation. So a balanced pop of color, in relaxing hues and textures, is the answer to my new ocean-themed master suite.

This room is a reflection of me and my life on a tiny island in the Atlantic. As a water baby, I love every iteration of aqua – from the deepest teal to the palest sea foam…the color makes my heart sing. I smile every time I enter this room. HIMself loves it.

The sofa in my conversation area sets the be tropical beachy theme. Until now, I believed that only a solid bed covering would work with it. However, one stroll through Wayfair.com and I knew this Laurel and Mayfair Sealife Quilt (below) would add the pop of color the drab, dark space needed. I believed this space could pull a bolder look off with exuberance.

A Relaxed Vibe with Depth

The patterns of the quilt and the shams add depth and texture to the room. It was nice before, yet it screamed for texture and layers.  I removed the window coverings to allow in as much light as possible through the two tiny windows, which flank the sofa. The view from open French doors to the lanai is stunning.

Mermaids and Love – The Ocean is Where I Belong

Change is good, so they say. I think this change is good for the soul. Not exactly sure how this one pop of the color wheel can refresh and renew a room so well, but it does. It is a happy space now. The energy comes from the play of colors and pattern. I added a few accessories to make it me. The mermaid pillow says it all with, “the ocean is where I belong.” And so it is. The mermaid is a special symbol of mine. Our last home was dubbed ‘Mermaid Manor.’ So I brought a little of Mermaid Manor into ‘Angel Wood Cottage.’

Opal, our mermaid doll, swims at the foot of the bed on a rustic white trunk. She adds her special brand of mermaid magic to the space. She was one of my first purchases when I moved to Amelia Island in 2001. She watches over morning tea from the small silver tea service. I love mixing rustic pieces with exquisite things to create a madcap mix of playfulness. A beach home must be casual in my mind.

I made the “All you need is LOVE and the beach” pillow as favors for the guests at our wedding. The new coral Cora Cotton shams add more texture to the vignette. It also speaks to my love for HIMself and the beach! 🙂 It resides on his side of the bed to whisper, “I love you.”

I love loads of pillows on my bed. It takes an extra effort in the mornings, but it is worth it.

Accessories Add More Pop

I own a multitude of beachy accents. The painting below, by my dear friend Sandy Pineault, anchors the night stand under a palm tree lamp.

And the room would not be complete without a sea shell or two. The starfish make Opal feel right at home.

Updates with a Fresh New Palette

I created a pop of color idea board at Wayfair.com. Check it out for plenty of colorful ideas for your bedroom. This room took a beachy spin of the color wheel for sure. How would you spin the color wheel?

Yes! Definitely fab with the color added! I wonder if you could find an oversized sand dollar to replace the wreath above the bed. Wouldn’t that be fun?
