Madame Grès: Couture at Work Exhibit
Musée Bourdelle, Paris – through July 24….
If you are in Paris this week, don’t miss this exhibit. These vintage designs give me ideas…ideas from Madame Grés from Paris Muses...known as a sculptor of fabric…Enjoy!!!
“I wanted to be a sculptor — for me it is just the same to work with fabric or stone,” claimed the designer whose dress hangs in chiseled pleats and folds among mighty statues.
Fashion Designer Alix Gres opened her first small shop, ALIX, on Rue du Faubourg Saint Honore in Paris. Her creations were exhibited at the 1939 International Exposition held in Paris and were awarded first prize.
The most striking thing about the work is how early the Madame Grès philosophy was set in stone (an apt metaphor for her sculptural style). The draped cloth in a whorl across the hips on a 1946 dress is echoed by a swirl at the back in the 1970s. – NYTimes article
Gorgeous…inspiring…got me thinking on how I can incorporate this into my mini designs! TFS
