Discussion: More Hobbies = Fewer Menopause Symptoms?

With the hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, weight gain, libido changes and other symptoms, menopause can be a time of dramatic change for many women. Dealing with these symptoms can be difficult, but a positive aspect of experiencing menopause during mid-life is that most women have a strong sense of self by the time they go through this life change. This means that most women have already developed a strong personal identity and know their likes and dislikes, who they are as a person, and where they feel is their place in the world. Knowing these qualities about yourself can be beneficial for menopause symptom reduction, too. menopause hot flash woman with fan Because menopause is a time of change, it is important to spend time doing things that you know you enjoy. Taking time to explore your hobbies and interests will help you to relax, decreasing your menopause symptoms such as irritability, moodiness, and anxiety. Also, spending time participating in recreations that you enjoy will help take your mind off uncomfortable symptoms such as hot flashes, and can make your menopause symptoms feel as if they have decreased in severity.

If you don’t spend much time doing ‘hobby-like’ activities that you enjoy, don’t worry. You know yourself even better than you probably think you do, which means you should have no problem finding something that you really enjoy. Ask yourself questions like, “If I could be doing absolutely anything at this very moment, what would it be?” and “When I was a child, what did I enjoy doing most in my free time?” Questions like these will help you to determine the kinds of hobbies you may enjoy, whether they may be painting, skiing, volunteering, singing, taking care of animals or starting a business.

When we spend time doing things that we enjoy, we don’t spend time thinking about the unpleasant things in life. During this time in our lives, menopause symptoms can fall into the category of “unpleasant things.” There are a number of methods we can use to help reduce the symptoms of menopause (including menopause treatments like Kuhl Care), but exploring different hobbies that you may enjoy is a great option considering it’s almost certain to make you happier.
