Tiny Lacy Butterflies

written by Rebecca E. Parsons

Editor’s Note: I recently applied for a spot on the Fiskars Design Team. This is one of my designs for Unique/Innovative Tool Use. I am also doing Get Your Craft on Tuesday at Today’s Creative Blog.

It was one of those fortunate creative moments when an idea turns a different direction from the original and something awesome happens. Entirely unplanned and happily elegant are these tiny lacy butterflies. I was trying to create flower petals with the Sea Pearls punch when, to my delight, a butterfly presented itself.

I started with punched circles cut in half. I folded them in half again to get a nice corner shape to insert in the corner punch. I pushed the pie-shaped piece in, turned the punch over to make sure it was seated properly and punched. It worked!!!

I intended to leave them in this pie shape but I opened one and it immediately said ‘butterfly wing’ to me. So I punched a second one, placed them together and voila…a tiny, lacy butterfly.

Then I decorated them with beads, wire, paint, etc. so they are ready for use on cards, jewelry, décor and much more.

I have since experimented with different papers and punches and finishes. Here are some of my ideas for them…

Used:
Fiskars Seal of Approval Squeeze Punch (Extra-Large)
Fiskars Lever Punch – Circle X-Large
Fiskars 3-In-1 Corner Punch – Sea Pearls

    Rebecca,
Your butterflies are beautiful, and it doesn’t surprise me at all that you had a “happy mistake” and created something beautiful out of it. You’re one of the most creative people I know and it’s so great to watch you flourish in so many different creative directions.
