Fiber Art and Painted Fabric
I paint fabric! After I paint it, I create purses, tote bags, and accessories with the painted cloth. I teach others all my techniques for fun and funky painting using freehand painting, stencils, and rubber stamps on almost any fabric. We even use paints to dye fabrics. I call the purses I create “Doodle Bags.” They are my whimsical doodles!!
The Dixie Doodler – Doodle Bags
Accessories, Clutches, Wallets, Totes and Jewelry
Functional Custom Artwork!
Mixed media artist, Rebecca E. Parsons introduced her line of accessories called The Dixie Doodler-Doodle Bags in 2010. Rebecca designs, hand paints, sews and fashions one-of-a-kind purses, wallets, and jewelry out of cotton, denim and canvas dropcloths from her mural and faux finishing days. Each piece is named and signed and dated! The are collectible and functional artwork.
One day (May 18, 1994) I was folding a dropcloth and noticed a heart-like paint spatter that I had signed and dated when it happened. It gave me the idea to make a tote bag. Because of where it was on the dropcloth, I could not get it in the right orientation for a tote, so I made a clutch purse. Every time I carried it, people would stop me and ask where I got it. Lightening bolt idea. I could probably sell these things!!!” So The Dixie Doodler, an earlier painting alias of mine, was reborn…and Doodle Bags are introduced…

the colorful lining most always has pockets…
When I took one to North Carolina, the school loved it and asked me to teach a class making them….I taught that class on how to create these totes and accessories for three years at John C. Campbell Folk School .

I have just finished writing the curriculum for my Doodle Bags – funky painted purses, jewelry and more workshop at John C. Campbell Folk School. It is going to be a fun class…I can’t wait. The bags are part graffiti, part doodle and part whimsey. There is still time to join in too.
The workshop is going to be as fun and funky as the cover of the book.
